Nutrition Counseling Options

I provide comprehensive dietitian services for individuals struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating. I understand the unique challenges and complexities that come with these conditions, and I strive to create a safe and supportive environment for my clients. My approach is rooted in intuitive eating, a philosophy that encourages self-awareness, body acceptance, and attunement to one's internal hunger and fullness cues. Through individualized meal planning (that doesn’t have to involve tracking), nutritional counseling, and ongoing support, I empower my clients to develop a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. I believe in the power of creativity, compassion, and guidance to help individuals recover from disordered eating and foster a positive mindset towards themselves.

Because it is often a topic of discussion, I want to note that I do not specialize in intentional weight loss practices, but rather from the mindset that we can work with your body to see what a weight looks like for you that is free of eating disorder behaviors and thoughts.

Insurance-Based Sessions

I am contracted with Blue Shield of California. If you have this insurance, here are two steps below that you can do before our free consult to speed up the onboarding process, but is not required before booking:

  1. Verify Your Benefits:

This is a way to verify what benefits will be covered by your individual plan. This step is not required overall, however if your insurance claim is denied for any reason, as not all plans cover all benefits, you will be charged for the cost of the session at my self-pay rate. I am happy to answer any questions regarding this step. Below is a script to help guide you when contacting your insurance.

2. Request a Referral:

A referral is required for all insurance-coverage of nutrition services in California and can be obtained by any of the following health-care providers: MD, NP, PA, PsyD or DO. Call or email your provider to request this referral using this template (or your provider’s).

Some Testimonials

“Getting consistent reassurance that there is no way to do this "wrong", and that it's safe to stop dieting was incredible beneficial to the healing process in allowing me to dive into intuitive eating. Katy provided that, and she made me feel safe and helped me believe that health doesn't have a size.”

-Session Client

“The most helpful thing we came up with is the meal plan, but even more helpful than the physical tool, were the skills you helped me develop to feel comfortable putting the meal plan away, but knowing it's always available if I ever need additional support or guidance during a difficult time.”

- Session Client

“Great nutrition knowledge, organization and super prepared. A wonderful mix of knowing nutrition and being body positive and anti-diet. I could trust Katy to be non-judgmental, positive and encouraging. The tangible suggestions (meal planning, schedules, types of snacks, intuitive eating) have been really helpful.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is…

  • Eating disorders used to fall into three main categories: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. Now with the update to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) there are eight. Like any other disease state, this must be diagnosed by a qualified clinician using specific criteria. You can still seek treatment if you do not have an official diagnosis, and if you do not have an official diagnosis it does not mean that you do not have an eating disorder.

Disordered Eating is a much broader term. It is very common and perpetuated in our society by what we call “Diet Culture”. Some examples can be seen in fad diets, weight-cycling and “clean eating”. Though these behaviors may not be as “serious” as an eating disorder, they can cause long term harm physically, mentally and emotionally. Certain damaging eating behaviors can also be a precursor to an eating disorder.

  • Based on the book of the same name by Evelyn Tribole RDN and Elyse Resch RDN, Intuitive Eating is an approach to that gets you back to listening to your intuitive body and repairing your damaged relationship to food by changing your mentality. There are 10 foundational principles, some of which are: rejecting diet mentality, honoring your hunger and challenging the food police.

  • Associate for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) is a non-profit organization that focuses on taking weight out of the health equation. The focus instead is on body diversity, acceptance and compassion. It challenges the assumptions made about all body shapes and sizes which leads to more accessible health care for all. This organization is the owner of the trademark Health At Every Size® and HAES® so that the community of these principles can be protected.

  • In-line with the HAES® framework, weight inclusivity as a practitioner means that you are providing healthcare and guidance towards health goals independent of body size and weight. This takes the focus away from weight loss as the only way to achieve health and therefore reducing the shame associated with weight loss and dieting.
